The longer I have had foot pain the less I think that there is such a thing, at least in my case, as a
"cure for foot pain". I had my first (and worst) gout attack thirteen years ago, when I was 48. In addition, I developed
an unrelated painful condition in both feet three or four years later. It felt like I had small pebbles inside my shoe or my sock was
bunched up on the bottom right behind my toes, in the balls of my feet. It took me nine or ten years to self diagnose Mortons
Neuroma. Oh, I was born with flat feet, too. In my case I had worn the wrong size shoes for most of my adult life. At some point
in my late teens or early adult years, for a reason I can't explain, I stopped measuring my foot size each time I bought shoes and
just automatically kept buying size 10.5 (wide). For the first few years this situation inside my feet was just an annoying
discomfort when walking any distance. It was slowly getting worse, though. Finally my wife asked if I was sure I was wearing the
right size shoes.
I had to admit that it was a good question that I could not answer. I guess I had thought my shoe size at age twenty was as
immutable as my birth date or social security number. I scrambled to identify and get myself to the best foot-sizing technology I
could find. The digital and manual foot sizings at my local New Balance store indicated that I should be wearing size 11.5 (wide)
shoes. It turns out I found this out too late. Wearing too-small shoes for maybe 30 years had constricted, irritated and finally
damaged the main nerve inside the front half of each foot (the nerve associated with Morton's Neuroma). So about three years ago the
growing discomfort had evolved into distracting pain (even though I had immediately changed all my shoes to the correct shoe size).
A visit to a Sarasota podiatrist resulted in prescription, full-length shoe inserts ($45-$50 at New Balance). Wearing them provides
immediate and significant relief.
My feet still hurt like hell, though. If you are experiencing discomfort or pain in your feet make sure you've been wearing the right
sized shoes. I invite you to explore the links on this page to learn more about foot and other important health subjects.
